The Why, How, and What of Take Back Work

One of my favorite TED talks is Simon Sinek’s “How Great Leaders Inspire Action.” With over 35M views, there’s a good chance you’ve probably seen it. (And if not, here’s a link because it’s GOOOOD).
Sinek describes what he calls “The Golden Circle.”
It’s a model for how businesses talk about what they do. Most start with the outer ring – the what. They’ll tell you about their product and its specs. Maybe they’ll even tell you how they make it – with premium components, etc. But they’ll rarely get to the why. And according to Sinek, this is how companies like Apple truly differentiate themselves. They Start With Why (which just so happens to be the title of one of his books).
Because they start with why, they’re more likely to connect with their customers on an emotional level. It works because this is where human decision-making happens – in the part of the brain responsible for feelings. Not rational thought.
It’s brilliant. So why not take the same approach with Take Back Work?
Why start a workplace culture consultancy? How do we improve workplace culture? And what services does Take Back Work offer?
WHY
- What would life be like if you loved your work?
- How would it feel to wake up each day?
- What kind of mood would you be in when you came home?
Work has the power to be meaningful, gratifying, and fun. It should add to our lives, not detract from them. Because when we enjoy what we do, we make/build/create amazing products and services, which leads to more prosperity – however you might define it! We’re more likely to come home happy, and our positive moods impact those around us. We treat others with more kindness, and we have greater capacity to use our talents for good.
This was my experience. It took me over a decade to learn that creating positive workplace culture was “my thing” – and that discovery transformed my life. But one of the unexpected outcomes was that once we had a positive workplace culture, other people started finding their grooves, too. Seeing them come to life at work was the best feeling in the world! It sparked a momentum that not only resulted in tangible and impressive breakthroughs for our business, it led to the belief that if more people enjoyed work, our world would be a better place – for all of us.
HOW
How do we reach as many people as possible? When we focus on culture in the workplace, we go beyond the individual to reach whole organizations.
There’s no shortage of people tossing around Peter Drucker quotes like “culture eats strategy for breakfast.” But talking about culture and doing something about it are two different things. Most leaders have good intentions, yet culture often takes a backseat. That’s why Take Back Work partners with people like you who want to establish or transform their organization’s workplace culture. Whether you are a C-level leader, an HR professional, or a passionate intrapreneur who wants to make a difference, we can help!
You know that having a positive culture is a major competitive advantage, but that’s not your sole motivation for embarking on this journey. And that’s important – because you can’t just go through the motions on your way to real change. There’s no quick fix. You still have to do the work.
That’s where we come in. Want your organization to be more innovative? More agile? More customer-focused? We listen to what your desired end state is and guide you on a path to get there. We’ll ensure you have the right information at the right time to make the best decisions, and we’ll hold you accountable as you work toward your goals. We know you’re busy and we want you to achieve the greatest impact possible for your effort.
Culture change is hard, but working together, we’ll create an environment where people can thrive. If you haven’t experienced this before, the second- and third-order effects will astound you.
WHAT
At Take Back Work, we have a variety of methods that we combine for maximum effect.
Sometimes we advise – we share insight from experience and social science research. Other times, we coach – helping you draw the answers out of yourself. We also offer workshops and training on topics like employee engagement and design thinking. Planning an event or an offsite? We facilitate and do speaking engagements, too.
After years of working for large bureaucracies and learning from some of the best minds in organizational culture, we believe that having a strong client/consultant relationship is key to true change. Ideally, we’ll work together throughout your organization’s transformation. Still, we know that sometimes you just need a quick bit of inspiration or advice. A single workshop or coaching session can be a great place to start. It doesn’t matter if you are a small startup or a larger, more established firm – we’ll customize a plan to fit your budget and needs.
